Leah Fleischhauer’s audiology journey is marked by a relentless pursuit of clinical excellence and community service. With a foundational career spanning more than 30 years across North Carolina, she is known for melding scientific precision with a uniquely human touch. As a Doctor of Audiology currently serving at UNC Health and a senior martial arts instructor in her community, Fleischhauer is an embodiment of lifelong learning and compassionate care. She holds a Master’s degree in Audiology from the University of Virginia and a Doctor of Audiology from A.T. Still University, combining academic excellence with a deep commitment to patient-centered care.
Expanding Access to Specialized Hearing Care
Leah Fleischhauer’s experience delivering patientfocused care across various clinical settings reflects her mission to make high-quality hearing and balance services accessible to all. Going beyond test results, she ensures patients understand their diagnoses and feel supported in every stage of care. She helps individuals and families make informed decisions, bringing clarity to what can often be an overwhelming process.
She transformed the system by tackling some of the industry’s most persistent challenges—such as the lack of access to specialized hearing care in underserved communities, inconsistencies in audiology training and the growing demand for vestibular services.
Recognizing a lack of access to specialized audiological care, especially in smaller communities, expanded her clinical scope. From pediatric hearing assessments to intraoperative monitoring, Fleischhauer brought advanced services into general practice settings, making complex diagnostics like auditory brainstem response testing, vestibular testing and cochlear implant support more widely available across North Carolina. Fleischhauer has strengthened the field by contributing to training standards and licensing efforts, ensuring hearing care providers are well-prepared and ethical in their practice.
Raising Standards for the Future through Mentorship and Training
For Fleischhauer, diagnostics are only as valuable as the understanding they provide and follow-up care is as crucial as the initial consultation. She has always empowered her patients to engage in their care, helping families and individuals navigate complex diagnoses with clarity and confidence.
Along with the patients, she ensures proper guidance and training for upcoming providers. As the audiology field faces a growing demand for qualified providers, Fleischhauer responds by investing in the future of the profession— training students, mentoring fellows and overseeing the licensing and supervision of hearing instrument specialists. Her leadership strengthens the talent pipeline and ensures consistency and quality across practices she influenced.
Blending Science, Service and Spirit
Beyond her clinical work, Fleischhauer has dedicated over three decades to teaching martial arts at The Mastery Center. As a senior instructor, she has helped build confidence and self-protection skills in students of all ages, especially empowering women and children through self-defense education.
Her ability to lead in medical and community spaces reflects a belief that care is not just about treatment— it’s about connection, respect and trust. Whether supporting a patient through recovery or guiding a student on the mat, she leads with quiet strength and lasting impact.
