Lori East is the Radiology Manager at Novant Health, bringing over 25 years of experience as a CT Technologist and a wealth of knowledge in computed tomography and radiologic technology. Since January 2023, she has led a skilled team dedicated to delivering high-quality imaging services, overseeing daily operations, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and budgeting. Lori is also hands-on with CT scans and interventional procedures while mentoring new technologists.

Radiology has always been a cornerstone of modern healthcare, bridging technology with patient care in ways that transform diagnoses, treatment plans, and outcomes. Over the course of my 25-year journey in this field and in my current role as a radiology manager, I’ve witnessed remarkable advances and new challenges in the way we approach imaging. Today’s radiology departments are not only tasked with interpreting images but also with enhancing the patient experience, optimising workflow, and adopting cutting-edge technologies.

Adapting to technological advances

One of the most exciting aspects of radiology is the continuous evolution of imaging technologies. Today’s equipment has vastly improved, delivering higher-resolution images, faster processing times, and safer procedures, even for vulnerable patient populations. Artificial intelligence (AI) is another game-changer. AI-assisted diagnostics are now helping radiologists interpret complex scans with greater accuracy, allowing us to detect anomalies earlier and improve patient outcomes.

However, adopting new technologies requires more than just updating equipment; it demands a shift in our culture and approach. Training radiology teams to work effectively with AI tools and staying current with advances is essential. Embracing technology also means working collaboratively across departments to streamline workflows, improve accuracy, and reduce turnaround times—all of which are critical in a high-stakes environment.

Balancing Technology with Patient-Centred Care

While technology is a powerful tool, radiology remains rooted in patient-centred care. Every scan and every interpretation impact a person’s health journey. In my experience, fostering a compassionate environment is essential. Patients often come to radiology departments with anxiety and questions, so creating an atmosphere of comfort and understanding is crucial.

This is where the human side of radiology makes an impact. While radiologists and sonographers focus on image quality, accuracy, and interpretations, they also play an essential role in patient interaction. A kind word, a listening ear, and a patient-centric approach can make a significant difference. This approach helps patients feel cared for and informed, creating a lasting positive impact.

Building strong, collaborative teams

Managing a successful radiology department requires more than technical skills; it requires leadership, empathy, and a commitment to team cohesion. One of the most rewarding parts of my role is guiding a team of talented radiology professionals, including sonographers, who bring unique skills and perspectives to patient care. Building a culture of continuous learning, trust, and open communication is vital.
